John Parke Custis, ALS to George Washington, written at Mt. Vernon, January 9, 1779; 4 pp., 4to. A remarkably vivid letter on current political issues, including soldiers' bounties and financing the war, and the business of the plantation. Col. G. Mason and Gunston Hall prominently mentioned; legislative acts against counterfeiting; explains taking on a huge debt in purchase of land from the Alexander family (later, the Arlington estate); recounts difficulties regarding a contract for cattle for Mt. Vernon.
