Description
Original duplicate copy of an Act of King George II executed by the Virginia House of Burgesses to settle a dispute between Augustine Washington Jr., Samuel Washington (Brother and half-brother of George Washington), and William Withers, concerning ownership of a large farm called Chotank, on the Potomac River. Augustine Washington Sr. had purchased the farm in 1727 from Sarah Withers, who had a lifetime estate in the property, but, unknown to Washington, had no right to sell it. John Withers, the rightful heir, laid claim to the property, and it was resolved that the Washingtons would keep the farm but pay Whithers 600 pounds current money of Virginia. Written in ink on a large vellum sheet, about 25 x 30 in., with original embossed paper seal near the top
Condition
Old damp damage, with some losses to words near the upper center and folds. Old notes in pencil, front and back.
Provenance
Cited in Hening, Vol. VI, p.513. Also, Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Vol. 6, No. 3, pp.309-313. From the Estate of Philip S. Dubey, of Baltimore.
