Description
Original color photograph portrait, labeled "First Crew For the Space Shuttle Orbital Flight Tests (STS-1)" in the print, signed by the commander, John Young, and pilot, Robert Crippen, c. April, 1981, framed alongside an artist's concept of the shuttle at high altitude; photo-offset lithograph. Young, 1930-2018, was commander of Gemini 3, 1965, the first manned flight in the program; commanded the Apollo 16 lunar landing in 1972; and was Chief of the Astronaut Office, 1974-1987. Crippen, born 1937, piloted three subsequent shuttle missions, and was later head of the Kennedy Space Center.
