Description
Gov. Samuel Ogle (d.1751) handwritten order to the colonial armorer, Onorio Razolini, to supply Captains Thomas Cresap (1702-'90) and Nathaniel Rigby with various weapons, ammunition, and other accessories, October 23, 1736, signed, with integral receipt signed by Cresap the same day, and further receipts on a second page the same day by W. Raimond and Aquila Paca (1702-'43); 2 pp., small 4to (originally one folded sheet, later trimmed). This documents the arming of Maryland militia to fight Pennsylvania forces in what is now York Co., PA, but was disputed territory until the survey of the Mason-Dixon Line in the 1760s. Soon after, Pennsylvania troops captured Cresap, who was jailed in Philadelphia ("The prettiest city in Maryland" according to Cresap) until King George II ordered his release.
Condition
Trimmed; horizontal folds with some separation along the folds; uneven but generally light toning
Provenance
From the estate of a Maryland collector.
