Description
Original survey and map of a tract of land (200 acres along what is now Mine Run Branch) "near the Great or Lower falls of Patowmack River," then in Stafford Co. (now Loudon) Virginia, executed by James Thomas for Robert "King" Carter (1662/3-1732, of Nomini, Westmoreland Co.) on behalf of his son, Robert Carter Jr. (1704-1732), dated July 17, 1728; 1p. folio. Thomas was official Surveyor of Westmoreland Co. and had contracted to survey 20 tracts for Carter (of which this appears to be one). The land baron was displeased with the results, and accused him of laziness, incompetence, and possible dishonesty in a letter of Oct. 18, 1728.
Condition
Parallel vertical folds, with a couple of small associated holes, brief notes in pencil
Provenance
From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from Walter H. Benjamin, Nov., 1973. (Published in The Collector, issue 830.)
