John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudon, (1705-1782, British military officer, during French & Indian War made Commander in Chief of British forces in North America and Governor of Virginia) large fragment of a letter, signed, [August 15], 1756, to Maj. Gen. John Winslow (1703-1774), then stationed at Fort William Henry on Lake George; 2 pp., folio format, but missing about 3 in. from the top (about 5 lines of text on each page). Informs Winslow of a new strategy against the French and orders him to assume a more defensive position against French encroachment. Loudoun's strategy would prove disastrous, and in 1757, he was relieved of command.

Separated along horizontal folds; restored and consolidated with silk fabric
