Description
Baron Jeffrey Amherst (1717-1797, leading British officer in the French & Indian War, captured Louisburg in 1758, commander in chief in North America, 1759, Gov. General of North America, 1760-'63) autograph letter signed, dated at Riverhead, Kent, June 18, 1767, to Lt. Col. Henry Gladwin (1729-1791, British officer, veteran of Braddock's defeat, and commander of British garrison at Detroit during Pontiac's War, 1763-'64), 1 p. small 4to, 9 x 7 1/4 in., with integral blank sheet. Amherst acknowledges the introduction to one Anthon (possibly Dr. George Christian Anthon, 1734-1815, who Gladwin would have known in Detroit and who later served as a surgeon in the British army during the Revolution), but explains that General Gates has already appointed another man to an open position in America.
Condition
Intersecting folds, with separations mended with tape, particularly on the blank leaf, but also affecting the signature
Provenance
From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from Walter Benjamin Autographs, Newe York, December, 1979.
