James Smith (about 1720-1806, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, active through the war in Pennsylvania state and United States government) autograph letter, signed, dated at York, PA, Nov. 22, 1777, to "Hon. Col. Byard" (Col. Stephen A. Bayard, 1744-1815, of the 8th PA Regt.) concerning two military appointments, endorsed by Bayard; 1 p. 4to, 8 x 6 1/4 in., with address verso; inlaid on a larger sheet; Together with a grisaille watercolor portrait of Smith, signed "G. B. Graf" (19th century) and a small engraved image of Smith's house in York, PA, both inlaid on a larger sheet.

Light folds, trimmed and inlaid, light water staining at left margin
