Description
Three-sided needle blade, 32 in. L.; unmarked silver hilt with carved bone grip; 38 in. L. overall; together with a portion of the original silver-mounted leather scabbard. Carried by Major Benjamin May (1736-1808), of Pitt Co., NC, who commanded the Pitt Regiment, and reportedly fought at the Battle of Guilford Court House in Feb., 1781. He was also active in local government in late colonial and early national period, serving on the local Committee of Safety and present at the Halifax Declaration of Independence, April, 1776. Additional documentation with familial descent, tags, and research.
Condition
Blade has scattered pitting and a slight curve to the left. Grip has a few darkened cracks
