18th century: a type used by soldiers for cutting brush and other purposes, comprising 1) One with heavy blade, with a short sharpened segment on the back, 10 1/4 in. L., with iron mounted hickory handle, 17 1/4 in. overall; 2) One with short, strongly hooked blade, 7 3/4 in. L., the tang worked into a hook/knuckle bow over tapered wood grip, 12 in. L. overall. Each with modern reproduction scabbard.
