Description
A Brown Bess style rifle composed of European and American parts, 3rd quarter 18th century: round barrel secured to stock with pins and later wires, with no apparent marks, 43 in. L.; flint ignition, the plate with Crown and V proof mark; beech full stock with brass butt plate, trigger guard, thumb rest, and ramrod guides; iron ramrod; 59 5/8 in. L. overall. Accompanied by a bayonet of the period, stamped "70" on the ricasso and engraved "82" on the socket, 16 3/4 in. L.
Condition
Fore end of the stock partially damaged, with some losses. Barrel corroded near the muzzle

From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from Guthman Americana, 1988, with his adhesive labels. Deaccessioned from the Essex Institute, Salem MA, circa 1979.
