Additional Comment, Oct. 27:
With regard to authenticity, we have no reason to doubt this is an authentic product of the 18th Century, based on our experience with antique metalwork. The hammer marks and engraving are entirely in keeping with the period.
The collector acquired many of his objects from Guthman Americana, though we are unsure whether this came from him. There is no link to an individual officer, so we cannot say that it was used in American during the Revolutionary War.

Additional Comments, Oct. 28:
The edges of the gorget are magnetic, indication the copper was reinforced at the edges with iron wire. The gilding appears to be original and unrestroed. It is rather thin in areas, allowing the copper to show through with a rosy tone.
Provenance
From the estate of a Maryland collector.
