Craighill; THE ARMY OFFICER'S POCKET COMPANION; Principally Designed for Staff Officers in the Field (NY: Van Nostrand, 1862) 12mo, publisher's full leather, marbled endpapers, custom-made clamshell box. Inscribed "E. P. Alexander / Capt. Engrs. C.S.A. / Army of the Potomac / Dec. 31st., 1861" on front flyleaf and similarly two other times. Alexander (1835-1910) graduated West Point in 1857, briefly served in U.S. Army as an engineer, but joined CSA when his native Georgia seceded; became leading artillerist in Army of the Potomac, rising to rank of Brigadier General
