Jiaqing Era, circa 1800-10 shaped stand with Blue Fitzhugh border and central image of hope. The figure of Hope in puce and blue, leans upon an anchor on a green ground, surrounded by gold and mauve husk and floral mantling in puce, mauve, iron-red, and green. Although the classical female figure of Hope with an anchor and cable was used for the arms of the State of Rhode Island, she also personified commerce in both American and British naval motifs. This example, with its underglaze blue “true” Fitzhugh border, is known to have been made for the Rhode Island market at the end of the 18th/beginning of the 19th century. 5 1/2 in. Diam.
