Description
Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, color concert poster, Grateful Dead Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, catalogue #FD-26-OP-1, original printing, promoter Family Dog, sheet size: 19 15/16 x 14 3/16 in., framed.
Of the work Glen Trosch states, "The FD 26 Original Poster is without question one of the “Holy Grails” in the entire Psychedelic Concert Poster genre. This issue is on everybody’s top 3 lists of “most desirable” posters. This world-famous piece of art was designed by the legendary 1960s concert poster artists Stanley Mouse and the late great Alton Kelley. The story of Mouse and Kelley searching the stacks at the San Francisco library for an appropriate illustration for the poster is well documented. The duo discovered this illustration by 19th-century artist Edward Joseph Sullivan for an edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
If we had to own just ONE PIECE for our own personal collection this would be it. This poster defines the term “historically important”. The “Skull and Roses” from this very poster would be appropriated by the Dead for the rest of their careers and go on to be an internationally recognized logo for the band."

Condition
Additional comments added on 9/19/23: We are offering the works in partnership with Psychedelic Art Exchange. The poster was in a CGC restoration holder as shown in photos. It was removed to be framed for an exhibition. Label reads: restoration includes color touch, pieces added, trimmed. The trim was between 1/16-1/18 inches. I went back and found the original certification in a restoration holder the label reads; Restoration includes Color Touch, Pieces added, trimmed.
I recall that it was lightly trimmed but not the exact detail. 1/16in. -1/8 in. We would need to get it out of the frame to determine precisely.
Framed original with minor edge trim
