Description
(German/American, b. 1937). Color concert, signed by all members of the Dead and by Peter Max, 3/1/1988, (OP-1) Original Pre-Concert First Printing Poster, 36 x 24 in., unframed and rolled in a tube.
Of the piece, Glen Trosch states," This big, beautiful Grateful Dead poster was designed by one of the most recognizable artists of the 1960s, Peter Max. Max created several memorable ad campaigns for Madison Avenue that encapsulated the hippie flower power aesthetic for the masses. This work is essential to pop culture. Max achieved celebrity status and commercial success and licensed merchandise of every shape and size. The Peter Max commercial poster catalog is well-known and seriously collected. Several event posters were created along the way and this 1988 Grateful Dead poster is a sweet spot, a favorite for collectors of the band and the artist.
Max’s business team approached the promoter of the 1988 Dead tour and proposed the design to be used for a poster and T-Shirt to be sold at shows. In addition to the sold-out show edition, there were approximately 200 Artist signed copies.
Peter Max and Victor Zurbel were backstage when The Dead played at the Meadowlands in 1988. A handful of copies were presented to the Band to sign backstage. This lot is one of the few Band signed copies from that evening."
