Description
Yongzheng era, circa 1730
Chinese export for the English market. The arms are of BISSE (or BYSSE) of Somerset and Durham, impaling those of BILL (or BYLL) of Clymsland in
Cornwall, all above the punning motto ‘Sis faelix bis.’ The border on this plate is unusual, being
painted in a cell-diaper pattern, alternating between portions painted en grisaille and portions
painted in gilt. An identical plate was in the Cecil H. Bullivant collection and another one is in
the Leicester Museum in England.
