Edo Period, circa 1690-1750 gilt and colored pigment on rice paper, large two panel folding screen, having gilt background, with image depicting two level lacquer garment rack, with three garments and sash, draped over it, mounted on fabric backing, supported by folding brass mounted lacquered wood frame, 67 in. H., 70 in. W.
Condition
Small hole, scratches, wear, some in painted areas, fabric thin in some areas. When bidding online please consider size and delicacy
Provenance
Tagasode Byobu, literally meaning "whose sleeves" is a screen making tradition that flourished in the late 17th century up to th early 19th century. It was created so artisans could display their mastery of color by depicting rich multi colored fabrics. Also a reason for the patron to display their wealth by having the expensive and lavish garments shown.
