Description
A "Quintuple Eagle" ($50 Round) struck under the authority of the California Historical Society and graded by PCGS as Gem Proof. It was struck in 2001 on transfer dies made from the original Kellogg & Co dies. The ingots recovered from the SS Central America were .887 fine gold and each had 1309 grains for a total of 2.4189 Ounces of Gold. The SS Central American sank Sept 12, 1857 in deep water carrying tons of Gold Rush gold and other precious cargo. It partially caused the Panic of 1857 as many NY banks could not meet payroll or pay creditors and helped speed up the events leading to the Civil War. It was not found until 1987
Provenance
Final Consignment from the estate of Marc Rudick, Rye, New Hampshire. Comes with a copy of the COA that was with UNC version in lot 648.
