Description
Late Edo Period, circa 1830-40, steep side bowl with alternating vignettes of Nambans (Portuguese explorers), animals and geometric patterns, with pomegranate in interior center, 5 in. H, 10 in. Diam., with carved wood stand. Namban the Japanese term for Western explorers, literally translates into "Southern barbarians" the term came into use in 1543 when they landed in the Southern port at Kyushu
