Description
Late Qianlong era, circa 1795-1800, painted in Famille Rose enamels in a particularly detailed fashion, depicting an image commonly known as "The Spanish Pointer," 6 in. Diam. The subject matter of this plate derives from an engraving commission by Thomas Bradford during the 1760s. Mr. Bradford commissioned George Stubbs to paint the scene and William Woollett to subsequently engrave it,the Woollett engraving first published in 1768. The version of the scene was then double-reversed on an engraving by an employee of Sayer & Bennett, dated January 23, 1775, on copies (in reverse) of the famous engraving by Woollett. As the years passed, the copyists faithfully rendered the details of the original, but for the addition of a pheasant to the scene. The Stubbs painting has been in a museum in Munich, Germany since 1799. Several later prints, derived from the Woolletts engraving were published, including by T. Cook as the engraved title to Vol. II of the Sporting Magazine, published in London in September 1793. Indeed, it is this 1793 print that the Chinese artists in Canton may have been sent to use as the source for the design depicted on this extremely rare plate
