19th century or earlier, including a broad sturdy blade with suguha temper line doubling around the tip; the habaki appears to be silver, 15 1/2 in. L, 1 5/16 in. D at the hilt, the tang 5 3/8 in. L and 5/16 in. thick at the back; a two-character signature on the left side of tang. The handle with chased metal fittings, with signed fuchi, no tsuba present. Maki-e scabbard with delicate vine and tendril pattern on a muted metallic ground, 18 in. L, lacking kashira at the tip. Inscribed kotsuka with gilt copper alloy handle, decorated with scenes of scholars in a landscape, 8 1/2 in. L overall
Condition
The blade appears to have been altered from a tachi. Scabbard shows wear, lacks metal cap for the tip
