Description
Phillip II, from the House of Hapsburg, was King and ruler of many places and Spain from 1556-1598. A devout Catholic, he sent the Spanish Armada in 1588 to invade England and storms destroyed the fleet. These large silver 8 Reales were the "Pieces of 8" and often cut down to 1/8 size, hence the old Rhyme "2 Bits, 4 Bits, 6 Bits a Dollar." This coin was minted by the Royal mint in Seville and has a full shield with much of the outside lettering worn away, a bold cross on the reverse with the only letter visible is a D. Reverse has a small planchet loss of material to the NW of the shield. Should grade VF
Condition
For sizing, it is not a perfect circle. From the top of the shield to the bottom it is 39.91 mm. From the side to side it is 39.26mm. Diagonally the two measurements are 39.4 and 38.42. It was weighed at 27 grams and x-ray florescent test for silver at 99 %
Provenance
From the Estate of a Maryland Collector
