Trade dollars were initiated a year before this 1874-S coin. They weight a little more than a US Silver dollar and were made to compete with the Mexican silver coins in the orient. The weight is clearly marked "400 grains of .900 silver" which was rarely done on previous coins if done at all, but it showed the important silver content. This coin has nice AU details but no luster is remaining from it's cleaning. It is a nice type coin for a collector's album. 27.16 grams
