John Morton (1724-1777, Signer of the Declaration of Independence from PA, headed committee that adopted Articles of Confederation) part-printed commission, signed as Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly, Philadelphia, July 8, 1776; 1 p., oblong folio, 8 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.; appointing Alexander Matthews a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion, in "one of the Companies to Compose part of the flying Camp." The blanks completed in the handwriting of Timothy Matlack (who also engrossed the Declaration of Independence); with additional note, "exchanged 2nd Septr. 1776" and initialed "TM" (Timothy Matlack).

Intersecting folds, with some separation and wear; losses filled in with paper and the back silked; light pencil notes
