American hunting sword or cuttoe, 3rd quarter 18th century: hand-forged straight, single-edged blade, with false edge toward tip, 24 3/8 in. L.; Bronze hilt with simple counterguard and scallop-shell langet, loose disk pommel, and scrimshawed bone grip with floral forms and lettered "Elias Graves;" 28 5/8 in. L. overall. Elias Graves (1733-1802), resident of Guilford, CT, served in the French & Indian War under General Lyman and later Chauncey. He was an officer in the Ct. 4th Militia, rising to the rank of Captain under General Wm. Worthington.
Condition
Stored in custom hand-made box (with minor damage). Lower tip of guard has broken off; ferrule at the pommel missing
