Description
Jiaqing Era, circa 1800-10 large mug with en grisaille and gold, with band at the rim and central scene of a farmer leaning on a cow , a dog at his feet, a ram and a ewe nearby, all amid a rocky pasture with trees, shrubs and a pond, buildings in the distant background. Popularly known as the "Cow" design, this pastoral scene is possibly after a Dutch engraving that was copied by Mary Hollingsworth of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ink-and-wash copy was probably taken to China in 1811 by her brother Henry, who placed several orders for porcelain. There are at least four services with this design, two of which were owned by Israel and Mary Hollingsworth Morris, who married in 1799. 5 1/2 in. High. For further reading, see "From East to West, Quaker Farmer Chinese Export Porcelain in America," a catalogue that accompanied an exhibition at Dumbarton House in 2005-2006.
