Description
Qianlong Era, circa 1750 plate executed in Famille Rose enamels, depicting Apollo and Daphne. Very rare and attractively decorated in brilliant enamels with a scene of Apollo in yellow-lined pink drapery seated beneath a tree, a lyre in his hands, gazing at the pensive female at his side, her chin cupped in her right hand and dressed in a loose blue and aubergine robe, four floral sprays around the rim spaced within a narrow en grisaille border. An identical plate from the Basil Ionides Bequest in the British Museum (London) was included in the Exhibition of the China Trade, Royal Pavilion, Brighton, 1986, Catalogue no. 122, where the subject is described as Daphne and Apollo, and another in the Zeeuws Museum, Middleburg (The Netherlands), is illustrated by Scheurleer, Chine de Commande, pl. 224, together with a second dish with the same borders but different figures (Flora and Zephyr). 9 inch.
