Description
Qianlong Era, circa 1780
topographical subject of a four storied walled building with a drawbridge.
Decorated in gilt and polychrome enamels. Each piece painted with a central medallion containing an outdoor scene depicting an impressive Northern European-style residence shaded by the branches of a large arching tree and protected by a moat with a raised draw-bridge; enclosed by an elegant famille rose border of pendant blossoms and bunches of grapes. This remarkable cup and saucer is extremely rare because of its remarkable unused condition. It was part of a service in the possession of a European family since the 18th century and was never used. The central scene, after a European print or engraving, is as of yet unidentified. However, due to the Chinese artist’s perfection of Western perspective as well as the elegant famille rose border pattern, one is able to place the production of this service close to 1780.
saucer, 5 1/2 in. Diam., bowl, 3 1/2 in. Diam.
