Late Qianlong Era, circa 1790 Inside a medallion, opposite the handle, there is a scene where two young women are under the shade of a tree in front of a house. One is standing while the other one is seated and spins. The house door is half open revealing its interior. The source for this decoration is still unknown. The Seamstress was a recurrent theme for eighteenth century artists such as Diego Velasquez (1599-1660) The Seamstresses (Museo del Prado, Madrid) or Jean Jacques de Boissieu (c. 1758), now in a private collection. It was also a preferred theme of the earthenware manufacturers such as Nevers. Other known examples of this subject were in the Hervouet Collection, the Veiga Collection, the Alves Collection, and the permanent collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. 3 1/2 in. W.
