Description
Qianlong era, circa 1740.
Chinese export Danish market. one of the most important items of Chinese export porcelain of the 18th century. This unique item, originally from a service made for King Frederick V of Denmark resided in Valdemar’s Castle on the island of Tåsinge near Svendborg, Denmark for almost all of its 280-year history. Decorated with a formal band of leaves, feathers, and carp, in pink, brown, and gold, a combination of colors that was popular from about 1740 to 1760, and sometimes alternating with panels of loose gold scrollwork. The medallions on either side of the punchbowl are taken exactly from a medal of 1739, engraved by Georg Wilhelm Wahl (1706-1778), and show on one side Christiansborg Palace (Copenhagen, Denmark), and, on the other, the dedication of a new dry-dock in Copenhagen on May 26, 1739. The medal was struck in 1739 with the King wearing the emblem of the Order of the Elephant and the inscriptions ‘CHRISTI VI D G REX DAN NORV VAND GOTH’; it is signed by W. G. Wahl. On the reverse of the medal, showing a ship in the dock, is the inscription ‘GLAVSTUM NAVALE A B AUGUSTISSIMO MONARCHA CHRISTIANO VI HAVNIPE ADORNATUM’ with the date ‘XXVI MAI MDCCXXXIX’. Interior with King Frederik V's crowned monogram.Provenance: Valdemar's Castle, Tåsinge. “Niels Juel Room”. (Inv. No. NJS 18). See B. L. 16 in. Diam.
