19th century or earlier, comprising a blade with wavy sambon sugi temper line; fitted with a copper habaki; 25 1/4 in. L, 11/8 in. D at the hilt; the tang, with three holes, bears an inscription on either side, centered toward the back edge and pommel, 7 3/8 in. L. The curved handle with engraved copper alloy mounts, 10 1/2 in. L. Unusual cross-shaped gilt copper alloy tsuba, of type usually associated with tachi swords, with loose engraved and part-gilt silvered copper insets. Scabbard with metal mounts matching the handle's, the wood covered with red-brown maki-e lacquer, 22 3/8 in. L. The kotsuka with inscribed blade and shakudo handle matching the rest, 8 1/2 in. L
Condition
The blade appears to have been altered from a tachi. Scabbard shows wear, lacks metal cap for the tip
