Dr. Benjamin Rush (1745-1814, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, active through the war in Pennsylvania state and United States government) autograph document, signed, as Surgeon General to the Middle Department of the Continental Army, dated June 16, 1777, certifying that Capt. Covell of the 3rd Battalion of the Pennsylvania Line suffered from chronic rheumatism, "which renders him unable to march or to endure wet weather;" 1 p., 4 7/8 x 5 3/8 in., inlaid on a larger sheet.
